The jetlag is still holding me, I am again awake at 4 am :-D - however, I think the excitement for sure contributes...
Today I will finally meet my supervisor, Cindy and I will be introduced to the people and work.

Nachdem ich den ersten Teil meiner Einweisung hinter mir hatte, durfte ich Allison auf ihrer geführten Wanderung begleiten.

Auf dem Bild oben sieht man die "honeycombs", die Honigwaben, auch Schweizer Käse genannt, die durch Verwitterung von weicheren Taschen innerhalb des Sandsteins entstehen.

The picture shows the so called honeycombs or swiss-cheese rock, which develops due to weathering of softer pockets of rock in the sandstone.

Der Wingate-Sandstein hat es mir bei unserer ersten Reise in den Südwesten vor 2 Jahren schon angetan. Die rote Farbe und die steilen Abbruchkanten sind beeindruckend! Ja, genau deswegen bin ich hier!

The wingate-sandstone fascinated me already 2 years ago during our first trip to the Southwest. The red color and the steep brim are impressive! That´s why I came back!

Nun bin ich fleißig am lernen, über Erdgeschichte, Geologie, Plattentektonik, die Namen der Schichten und warum sie so aussehen... Mir macht es Spaß und es ist klasse wenn man die Lehrbuchbeispiele direkt vor der Nase hat!

Currently I´m learning and studying the history of earth, geology, plate tectonics and the names of all the formations you can see and why they look like that. I am having fun, especially since I have the textbook examples right in front of me!

Auch wenn wir uns per Definition in der Wüste befinden (unter 25 mm Niederschlag pro Jahr), ist es hier sehr grün.

Even though we are in a desert (definition says less than 25 mm rain per year), there is plenty of green out there!

| Zwischen all den roten Steinen findet man oft schwarze Brocken bzw. Findlinge / Between all the red rocks you can find a lot of black boulders |
Die schwarzen Findlinge kommen vom benachbarten Boulder-Berg bzw. -Vulkan und sind während der letzten Eiszeit hierher transportiert worden. Lustiger Kontrast!

These black boulders originate from the close-by Boulder Mountain which was a vulcano and the rocks were transported to the park during the last ice age. Interesting contrast!

Fun fact: der Cohab Canyon ist benannt nach cohabitation (Zusammenleben) und die engen slot canyons werden die 5 Ehefrauen genannt... Hier haben sich nämlich die Mormonen mit ihren Frauen versteckt, als sie von der Regierung verfolgt wurden.

Fun fact: the Cohab Canyon got it´s name from cohabitation and the narrow slot canyons are called the 5 wives... The mormons were hiding here with their wives when they were persecuted by the government.

Yeah, impressive landscape. And that Cohab canyon is also very imposing! I'am asking myself if I could walk through it ;-) Or maybe I'll stuck in it. Who knows? :D
