| Guten Morgen, Sonne! (November 2017) |
Der Navajo Knobs trail ist der schwierigste unter den "frontcountry" trails, d.h., die, die in der Nähe des visitor centers sind. Es gibt noch andere, schwierige Wanderwege, die sind allerdings teilweise 1,5 Stunden Autofahrt entfernt, deswegen dann im "backcountry" (ja, der Park ist so groß!). Im August fand ich diesen Weg auch ziemlich anstrengend, aber da lag mir der jetlag noch in den Knochen und ich hatte mich an die trockene Luft und die Höhe hier noch nicht ganz gewöhnt (visitor center ist auf 1650m, die Navajo Knobs sind ca. 2000m). Außerdem waren es mal wieder über 30 Grad und kein Schatten weit und breit in Sicht... Im November dagegen sind wir bei angenehmen 15 Grad noch vor Sonnenaufgang los und die Wanderung kam uns super einfach vor! Die Ausblicke waren wieder fantastisch!

The Navajo Knobs trail is the most strenous of our frontcountry trails, which are close to the visitor center. There are other strenous hikes about 1,5 hours of driving from the visitor center which are the so-called backcountry hikes (yes, the park is that big!). Back in August the hike was indeed quite exhausting for me, but I guess I still had a jetlag and for sure I wasn´t adapted yet to the dry air and the altitude here (visitor center is 1650m, Navajo Knobs are at 2000m). Furthermore, we had more than 30 degrees Celsius and no shade on this trail... On the contrary, in November, we started before sunrise at 15 degrees Celsius and the hike was so easy! And views were fantastic!

| Wie eine kleine Oase liegt Fruita da unten, mit den Obstplantagen, die die Mormonen-Siedler vor 100 Jahren angelegt haben und die immer noch durch den Nationalpark gepflegt werden - Like an oasis, Fruita with all the orchards, established by the Mormon settlers 100 years ago and today taken care of by the National Park. |
Im Bild oben ist das visitor center oben rechts, am Highway 24. Der Highway führt rechts weiter, die Straße links ist unserer Scenic Drive, Dazwischen die Häuser zwischen den Bäumen versteckt, in denen wir wohnen. Ja, mitten im Park und im Nirgendwo!

The visitor center is to the right in the picture above, close to the Highway 24. The Highway is the road to the right, to the left is our Scenic Drive. In between the trees are the houses, where we live. Yes, in the park and out of nowhere!

Ich war übrigens nicht alleine unterwegs, sondern mit einem Freund meiner Mitbewohnerin wandern. Er kam gerade von einer mehr-monatigen (Wander-)Reise aus Südamerika zurück und war 3000-4000m Höhe gewohnt, deswegen machte ihm im Gegensatz zu mir diese Wanderung rein garnichts aus... Dazu noch in langen schwarzen Hosen, ich bin schon in meinen kurzen zerflossen!

I didn´t hike alone, a friend of my flatmate joined. He just came back from South America where he traveled couple of months and was used to elevations about 3000-4000m. So he didn´t mind the hike, but me! And he was hiking in black long trousers while I was melting away in my shorts!

| Wir sind zwar sehr früh los, um der Hitze zu entgehen, aber gegen 13.00 wurde es dann doch ganz schön heiß! Dann, im November, wollte ich es nochmal versuchen, denn der Blick von den knobs ist einfach zu schön und man vergisst es so schnell! Diesmal war ich mit Caiti unterwegs, einer Kollegin. Wir sind noch vor Sonnenaufgang los um das sich verändernde Lichtspiel beobachten zu können.

Then, in November, I wanted to hike it again, since the view from the knobs is so amazing and one forgets too easily how stunning it is! This time I was hiking with Caiti, a colleague. We started before sunrise to see the light changing in the morning.

Diesmal waren wir innerhalb einer Stunde am Rim Overlook und haben uns selbst darüber gewundert, wie einfach und schnell das ging! Angenehme Temperaturen, frische Luft und ich merke auch, wie sehr sich mein Körper schon an die Höhe und das wandern hier gewöhnt hat. Ich bin fast täglich draußen, hatte ja letztens schon über meine Beinmuskeln geschrieben. Das alles lässt mich hier über die Felsen springen, als ob es nichts wäre! Und es fühlt sich toll an!!

This time we were within an hour up at Rim Overlook and were surprised how easy and fast we were! Nice temperatures, fresh air and I recognize how much my body has adapted to the altidue and the hiking here. I am outdoor almost every day, wrote about my legs the other time. Altogether, I can just easily jump over the rocks as if there was nothing! And it does feel great!!

Nun habt ihr mal einen Eindruck bekommen, wo ich lebe und wie abgeschieden das hier ist ;-) Zum Einkaufen fahren wir eine gute halbe Stunde, größere Städte sind 1,5-2,5 h Fahrt entfernt. Wie schon erwähnt, kein Handyempfang hier, aber man gewöhnt sich dran und wir haben in den Häusern wifi, sodass ich Euch Bilder posten kann. Ich genieße die Ruhe und die Abgeschiedenheit, die frische Luft und die sehr dunklen Nächte mit einem fantastischen Sternenhimmel!

So now you got an impression where I live and how remote it is here ;-) For grocery shopping we drive a bit over half an hour, bigger cities are 1,5-2,5 hours away. As mentioned, there is no cell phone service here, but you get used to it and we do have wifi in the housing, making it easy to post pictures for you. I enjoy the silence and the remoteness, the fresh air and the very dark nights with a fantastic starry sky!
